GRANDPARENTS ARE AN INTRICATE PART OF THEIR GRANDCHILDREN'S LIVES

by Mary Frances Hansen

Grandparents play such an important role in the lives of their grandchildren. Grandparents are often seen as stress buffers, family watchdogs, arbitrators, and supporters. “Grandparents are a family's greatest treasures, the founders of loving legacy, the greatest storytellers, the keepers of traditions that linger on in cherished memory. Grandparents are the family's strongest foundation.” (Unknown)

Research suggests that children find unique acceptance with grandparents, which benefits them emotionally and mentally. Grandparents can be a major support during family disruptions. Grandparents are full of “Words of Wisdom” and can teach them many lessons. They are playmates for younger grandchildren and can definitely be role models, teaching them values to live by. The nurturing bond between grandchildren can help reduce risky behaviors.

When I think of the heartfelt memories that I shared with my grandparents, it brings tears to my eyes. I only had one set on my daddy's side. My grandparents were such an intricate part of my life growing up. I spent a lot of time with them and have so many beautiful memories. They taught me my values I have tried to live by all my life, such as unconditional love, respect for others, kindness, turning the other cheek, forgiveness, gratefulness, compassion, inner beauty, and I have passed them on to my three granddaughters. Deuteronomy 4:9, “Only be careful and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.” I have a special rapport with each of my granddaughters, and they are my sunshine, my joy, and I adore each of them.

I wanted to share some of the things they sent to me in their younger years which really touched my heart. Sometimes we don't realize what an impact we, as grandparents, have on their lives. I am 89 years young, and I have a large drawer full of cards I have received from each of my granddaughters over the years that I have treasured.

Rachael, my oldest granddaughter, is 37, married, and lives in Ft. Worth. She sent me a birthday card on November 29, 2014, for my 78th birthday, and the following is what she wrote.

“G ma, you have always been my biggest encourager. The world needs more beautiful souls like yours in it. You have taught me compassion, stability, and have shown me unconditional love. I would not be the young woman I am today without you. I love you more than you will ever know.” Rachael

Mayra, who is 28, now lives in Mexico City, sent me this message for my birthday. “Dear Grandmother, G- -Giving, F- Forgiving, R - Remarkable, A-Adored, N-Nurturing, D-Delightful, M-Marvelous, O-Optimistic, T-Tough, H- Humble, E-Enthusiastic, R-Radiant, M-Marvelous. All these words describe you. I just wanted to say how much I love you and miss you. You are the most loving and giving person I have ever met. I am so thankful for everything you do for me, and I love you so much. Your Second Oldest Granddaughter. November 29, 2014.”

Briana is my youngest granddaughter, 27, and lives in Portland, Oregon. When she was 10 years old, her teacher asked the students to write about someone who had been a big influence in their lives. Briana chose me, and the title of her page was...My Grandmother..

“Mary Frances Hansen is 74 years old but looks and acts like she is 54. She is the best grandmother ever! Ms. Hansen is very nice and energetic. Seriously, I've never seen a 74-year-old so energetic. She has the energy of a teenager. My grandmother is unique in so many ways. She is very giving and thoughtful. She sends my sister and me gifts now and then. She cares for all the Hansen family. To wrap this up, let's just say that my grandmother is special to me because she is like an “angel.” She is one of those people who cares for others and not herself. I love her so much. Thanks for reading. Briana Hansen-December 2010.” (Briana gave me the sign we are holding.)

WOW.... What a blessing I have received by being a grandmother.

Stay Strong, Stay Safe, and Keep The Faith!!!!
