SPECTACULAR FOLLIES PRESENTS “FEELIN’ GROOVY! OUR TRIBUTE TO THE 60S & 70S”

by Stacy Allyn Dominguez

The Spectacular Follies is coming back to town with an all-new, on-stage show, “Feelin’ Groovy! Our Tribute to the 60s and 70s” at the Garland Arts Center in April of 2025.

Highlighting the music, dancing and comedy from the two most transitional decades in history, the 60s and 70s, the Follies will pay a nostalgic tribute to the new and exciting music we listened and danced to. The audience will be transported to these glory days and will be singing along and rocking the night away as our cast recreates the energy of the music – from Disco to Soul to Rock, featuring many of your favorite hit songs.

Early 60s entertainment was a holdover from the 50s with TV shows and movies geared toward the whole family. Whether gathering in front of the TV to watch shows like Bonanza, Wagon Train or Gunsmoke, or going to movies featuring Cary Grant and Doris Day or watching splashy over the top musicals like The Sound of Music, families enjoyed these presentations together as a unit.

In the early 60s, young girls still wanted to dress like their moms, who wore shirt waist dresses, petticoats and pearl necklaces like the TV mothers in the sitcoms. Young boys wanted to dress like their dads who copied their style from the Rat Pack guys; slacks and sweaters over a shirt with a collar. All was going pretty well for this style during the Kennedy years, but something different was about to come and change everything.

Midway through the 60s, young people all across the country started to question the style and music from the days of Ed Sullivan and Lawrence Welk, and started yearning for music for their own generation. By 1967, gone were the bouffant hairdos of their mothers and long straight hair, platform shoes and miniskirts were the fashion of choice. Boys started to grow out their hair, wore sandals and bell bottoms and some even wore love beads. This shift in the young folk’s thinking broke ground for a whole new genre of music highlighted by the invasion from Britain bringing the ‘mod’ sound of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. In Detroit, a new record company called Motown introduced young people to Rhythm and Blues, showcasing a roster of stars like Smokey Robinson, Martha Reeves and the most famous of the groups, the Temptations and the Supremes.

The Spectacular Follies is thrilled to present our tribute to these new musical styles that led the way to music of today. Our exciting and talented cast, made up of entertainers over the age of 55, will bring back the memories that Baby Boomers experienced in those days.

The Follies is not a senior amateur show, our cast of talented performers come from many different professional backgrounds, including Las Vegas, Broadway, Hollywood and other places across the country, and all enjoy performing and showing their talents to other seniors in the area.

The Spectacular Follies has been presenting showcases to the Metroplex since 2008 when founder, Ned Startzel called Rose-Mary Rumbley and Mark Carroll, two famous Dallas entertainers, and the three came up with an idea to stage a senior showcase to highlight the talents of former entertainers who love live theater and wanted to continue to perform for an audience. The Spectacular Follies debuted on stage in 2008 and was an instant success and now it has become a yearly theatrical event.

The Spectacular Follies presents dancers, vocalists, comedians and the highlight of the Follies, the famous Follies Showgirls, who appear in lavish costumes with over-the-top feather headdresses. To popular demand, the Follies will again present our patriotic tribute to America, honoring our military veterans with song, dance and flag waving.

The Spectacular Follies entertains hundreds of audience members at the daily matinees for an afternoon of fun and a chance to relive the days of live theater. The mix of seniors, middle aged and young children make the Follies a true wholesome family destination that everyone can share together.

The Spectacular Follies is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve the traditions and legacy of the American performing arts for future generations, provide community outreach that inspires all age groups, educate by example and reinforce the vibrancy of seniors by presenting high quality performances at every performance.
