OLD MAN TIME

by Coy's Kitchen

Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two - the ball drops and Dick Clark welcomes in the New Year wishing us a good night.

Silly hats, champagne in hand, noise makers tooting and confetti floating in the air - Shouting

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

As we kiss our significant other, we begin to wrap our arms around each other and begin singing or humming a song no one really knows.

“Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind….”

Well, who knew this was a rhetorical question and does not mean to forget your friends. It’s a song about remembering friends, both old and new, and raising a cup of “kindness” for old times sake. It’s about celebrating and cherishing past memories, even if you just met. It’s about relishing the past year’s memories while looking into the new year with optimism and excitement.

The lyrics are derived from a late 18th century poem by Robert Burns. Burns sent the manuscript to a publisher in 1773, and the song was first printed in 1796, shortly after his death. It has since become a globally recognized song for bidding farewell and welcoming new beginnings, particularly on New Year’s Eve.

Auld Lang Syne has been sung in approximately 233 movies, and an unquantifiable number of TV shows. Also, has been sung by many musicians, both young and old, in different genres. It is impossible to give an exact number of countries that sing Auld Lang Syne, but its global present extends to places like the UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, India, China and various European and Asian Countries, making it the most widely sung song in the world - yet we hum and make up the words. Honestly, we can even sing Feliz Navidad and hum Auld Lang Syne? In my attempt to modernize the song and help with this year's festivities,

Should old acquaintance be forgot

And never cross our minds

Should old acquaintance be forgot

And all the love we shared?

We raise our cups and drink for you

For old time sake

Cheers!

May Auld Lang Syne be a sign of hope and energy, a song of memories past, present, and future. With each new year comes new opportunities, and inevitably, a chance to sing this song once again. - Mrs. Coy
