You know you are old when you tell the same story over and over. I may have written about my mother's Dairy Queen commercial, but I'm going to write about it once again because I always enjoy thinking about this experience.
I had an agent who called me about various auditions.
She called, "Go now. They're looking for someone to appear in a Dairy Queen commercial."
My mother was with me. "I don't have time to take you home, Mother. You will have to go with me to the audition," She was eager to go.
I arrived. "Sit here, Mother. I'll be right back."
I auditioned and the gentleman in charge led me to the hallway. "Don't call us. We'll call you." It was then he saw my mother. "Who is this?" he asked. "Oh, that's my mother. She is just here."
I'm sure you know what happened next. Mother got the part in the commercial.
For several years, TV audiences saw my mother lick a Dairy Queen and say, "That's good."
She became "hot" material. She made a Southwest Airlines Commercial that can still be viewed.
Southwest has put their commercials on You Tube.
If you say SOUTHWEST AIRLINES YOU TUBE--WE'RE SPREADING LOVE to your computer, a choice of Southwest commercials will be offered. Select the first one. A lovely flight attendant will sing, "We're spreading Love, all over Texas." Then she will offer a cup of tea to an old lady in a hat. That old lady is my mother! She will accept the tea. Then you will see this group of people running to board a plane. Mother will be the last one to get on the plane.
Mother made money filming this commercial. As long as it ran on television, she got checks.
She was called for another commercial, but she said she was "tired." I guess she was. Running after that plane was physically hard. After all, she was at Love Field for a whole day of filming.
